These steps will describe how to connect jumper cables to properly jump start a car:

  1. Ask for help. You will need another vehicle to help you out.
  2. Grab the jumper cables included in your emergency roadside kit.
  3. Both your, and the assisting vehicle in park/neutral and turn off the ignition.
  4. Attach one red clip to the positive(it would have "POS" or "+" on it) terminal of your battery.
  5. Take the second red clip, and attach it to the positive terminal of the other vehicle’s battery.
  6. Attach one black clip to the negative terminal of the other vehicle’s battery.
  7. Finally, attach the second black clip to an unpainted metal surface on your car away from your battery.
  8. Now, have the other driver start their vehicle and let the engine run.
  9. After a few minutes try to start your own vehicle.
